The meaning of the year-end ceremony
Feng shui expert Nguyen Song Ha said, “tat” means end, completion; and “nien” means year. Therefore, tat nien is simply understood as the end of a year.
Year-end worship is a ritual to mark the end of the old year and prepare for the new year.
On New Year's Eve, families gather to prepare a New Year's Eve offering tray with many traditional delicacies.
“First of all, the year-end offering tray is to express the children's respect to their ancestors and gods.
After that, this is an opportunity for family members to gather, review the old year, and welcome the new year," said expert Nguyen Song Ha.
Good day and time for year-end worship
Many families hold year-end ceremonies on the last day of the year (according to the lunar calendar). Year-end ceremonies can fall on December 30 (30th of Tet, full month), December 29 (29th of Tet, short month).
This year, the New Year's Eve falls on December 29 (December 29, 2024 lunar calendar, January 28, 2025 solar calendar).
However, some families hold the year-end ceremony early, maybe from the 25th, 26th, 27th or 28th of the 12th lunar month. This depends on the region and the schedule of each family.

Expert Nguyen Song Ha suggests that the best time to hold a year-end ceremony is the last two days of the old year. Homeowners should perform the year-end ceremony after performing all the rituals of cleaning the altar, worship room, removing incense sticks, and cleaning the incense bowl.
