The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Moscow has expanded the list of European Union (EU) officials and politicians banned from entering the country.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the country will impose sanctions on representatives of EU law enforcement agencies and trade organizations providing military aid to Ukraine, representatives of EU institutions involved in the prosecution of Russian officials, and those tasked with collecting documents related to the seizure of Russian state assets. The sanctions list also includes officials of the Council of Europe (EC), members of the legislative assemblies of EU countries, members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Parliamentary Assembly of Europe (PACE).

Earlier, on February 21, the EU agreed on the 13th package of sanctions against Russia related to the special military operation in Ukraine. This new package of sanctions targets nearly 200 Russian entities and individuals, but does not include new sectoral sanctions. This package of sanctions is expected to be officially approved on February 24.

In a related development, on February 23, US President Joe Biden announced sanctions against more than 500 targets in Russia as the Russia-Ukraine conflict nears its third year. The sanctions target Russia’s financial sector, defense industry, and defense procurement network. According to the US Treasury Department, this is the largest package of sanctions the US has imposed on Moscow since the conflict broke out on February 24, 2022.
