In a statement on February 11, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the USVs and missiles were in an area controlled by Houthi forces in Yemen and posed a potential threat to Navy and commercial vessels in the area. The attack was carried out on February 10.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked ships in the Red Sea, part of a shipping lane that carries about 12% of the world's shipping traffic. The Houthis say the attacks are a show of support for Palestine amid the conflict between Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Israel.

The Houthi attacks have forced other shipping companies to reroute around southern Africa, causing costs to skyrocket. In response to these new developments, US and British forces have launched several strikes on Houthi-affiliated targets in Yemen.
