The Pentagon statement said Secretary Austin discussed “the importance of increasing and maintaining” the flow of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, including through a new route from the port of Ashdod in Israel.

There are growing international calls for Israel to do more to help civilians in Gaza, where nearly all of the 2.3 million people are displaced and widespread famine is raging. Earlier, the Israeli military said on April 17 that food trucks from the port of Ashdod entered the blockaded Gaza Strip for the first time since Tel Aviv agreed to open the port to facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries.

According to the Pentagon, Secretary Austin and Secretary Gallant also discussed tensions in the Middle East after Iran launched a retaliatory attack on the Iranian embassy compound in Syria.

On April 18, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan convened a meeting of the US-Israel Strategic Advisory Group (SCG) to discuss a range of issues following Iran’s unprecedented missile and drone attack on Israel. The meeting was attended by Secretary of Strategy Ron Dermer and National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi on the Israeli side.

The White House said the two had a narrow discussion about the Iranian attack and their joint efforts to further strengthen Israel’s defense capabilities through advanced capabilities and cooperation with a broad coalition of military partners. Sullivan also informed Israel of new sanctions against Iran and other measures that will begin on April 18 in coordination with members of the Group of Seven (G7).

At the expanded meeting, which included interdisciplinary delegations, the two sides discussed Rafah. The US also expressed concerns about various options for action in Rafah and Israel agreed to consider these concerns and to have further discussions among experts under the supervision of the SCG.
