Heavy rain and thunderstorms kill 2 people and cause damage in many localities

As of 6 p.m. on June 16, heavy thunderstorms accompanied by hail had killed one person (due to a collapsed house) in Can Tho City; completely collapsed 41 houses and had their roofs blown off.

According to the Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, from June 14-16, heavy rain, hail and thunderstorms killed two people and caused much damage in many localities.

As of 6:00 p.m. on June 16, heavy thunderstorms accompanied by hail have killed one person (due to a collapsed house) in Can Tho City.

The natural disaster caused 41 houses to collapse completely and have their roofs blown off, and about 300 longan trees to fall. Total damage is estimated at about 800 million VND.

Hail and heavy rain in Binh Duong province also killed one person (swept away by floodwaters), two houses and a residential area in Uyen Hung ward, Tan Uyen city had their roofs blown off, 91 hectares of rice and crops were flooded, four urban trees were broken and one power line was broken. Total property damage was estimated at about 180 million VND.

In Thu Dau Mot City, three rented rooms and a awning were blown off, 10 urban trees were broken and some roads were flooded about 20cm, affecting traffic such as: Thich Quang Duc culvert intersection, Cach Mang Thang 8 street (from Hang Dua restaurant to Cau Trang), Vo Van Kiet roundabout...

Heavy rains and tornadoes swept through communes and towns in Bu Dang district, Binh Phuoc province, causing extensive property damage. A tornado in Duc Lap quarter, Duc Phong town, blew off the roof and damaged some belongings of a household.

In village 2, Nghia Trung commune, the tornado completely blew off the roofs of 2 houses and knocked down many crops. In Duc Lieu commune, heavy rain, thunderstorms and tornadoes occurred in villages 5 and 7, completely blowing off the roofs of 5 houses and knocking down many crops.

In Ho Chi Minh City, heavy rain over a large area lasting for hours caused many trees to fall on Nguyen Van Troi Street (Ward 11, Phu Nhuan District), Pasteur Street (District 1), Ly Thai To Street (District 10)...; localized flooding on many streets such as Le Lai Street, Le Thanh Ton Street, and the streets around Ben Thanh Market (District 1)... caused many vehicles to stall. In particular, hail appeared simultaneously in districts 1, 3, 4, 8, 10...

In Gia Lai and Tien Giang provinces, storms caused 4 houses to collapse and 27 houses to lose their roofs.

According to information from the Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue of Cao Bang province, heavy rain and landslides have damaged 10 houses; 27,353 hectares of crops have been broken and damaged; 2 hectares of perennial crops have been damaged; 4 landslides have occurred with a volume of about 400m3.

Immediately after the disaster, local authorities visited and encouraged the families of the deceased. At the same time, they mobilized local forces to support people in overcoming the damage, moving people and property to safety, and stabilizing their lives soon.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from June 17 to 26, the mountainous and midland areas of the North will have scattered showers and thunderstorms at night and in the morning, with some heavy rain. The Central Highlands and the South will have scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening and at night, with some heavy rain. The above areas should be on guard against thunderstorms with the possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.

To proactively respond and minimize damage, the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control recommends that localities affected by heavy rain, accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind continue to closely monitor warning and forecast bulletins; promptly and regularly notify and guide authorities at all levels and people to proactively prevent and minimize damage; and have on-site forces ready to promptly support people in overcoming the consequences.

Localities direct specialized agencies to coordinate with provincial television stations and media agencies, especially at grassroots levels, to propagate, disseminate, and instruct people on how to recognize and respond to thunderstorms with tornadoes, lightning, hail, strong gusts of wind and heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides to minimize damage. At the same time, organize serious on-duty shifts and regularly report to the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

Previously, from June 8-10, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms caused serious damage to people and property in the northern provinces and cities, especially the three localities of Ha Giang, Quang Ninh and Hai Phong.
