United Airlines Airbus 1382 was preparing to take off from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, on the morning of February 2, heading to New York, when an engine caught fire. The fire from the engine gradually spread to the wing where the fuel was stored, causing a lot of smoke.

Passenger Ashlyn Sharp said she was trying to sleep when she heard a loud noise and felt the plane shaking even before takeoff.

"We were still on the runway, but it sounded like something was stuck in the engine, which scared everyone. That's when I looked out the window and saw the engine, the wing on fire. We could smell smoke in the cabin," Sharp said.

Sharp added that she tried to stay calm until others began to panic, screaming and trying to get off the plane. "The flight attendants initially asked passengers to remain seated, but they started evacuating when they saw the panic," she said.

A total of 104 passengers and five crew members had to be evacuated via stairs and slides. The Houston Fire Department said they did not have to intervene to extinguish the fire.

"After the evacuation, we were stuck on the runway for about two and a half hours before ambulances, police and shuttles arrived," Sharp said. George Bush Airport officials arranged another flight to take passengers to New York at noon that same day.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has opened an investigation into the cause of the engine fire.
