Man Utd appointed Ruben Amorim as Head Coach today, on a contract until July 2027 with an option for a one-year extension.
According to the announcement on Man Utd's homepage, Amorim took office on November 11 and debuted in the trip to Ipswich Town in the Premier League on November 24.
"Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly regarded young coaches in European football," the statement said. "He led Sporting Lisbon to two Primeira Liga titles, including the club's first title in 19 years."
Thus, before moving to Man Utd, the 39-year-old coach will lead Sporting for three more matches, against Estrela da Amadora, Braga in the Portuguese National Championship and Man City in the fourth round of the Champions League. At the same time, Man Utd will continue to compete under the direction of interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, respectively against Chelsea, Leicester in the Premier League and PAOK in the fourth round of the Europa League.
Amorim has risen to prominence in recent years thanks to his success at Sporting. This season, he and his students are leading the Portuguese National Championship with a record of nine wins, scoring 30 goals and conceding only two. Amorim's team are also unbeaten in the first three rounds of the Champions League, beating Lille 2-0, drawing 1-1 with PSV and beating Sturm Graz 2-0.
Amorim had planned to leave Sporting at the end of this season. Many newspapers said that the 39-year-old coach would go to Man City to succeed Pep Guardiola. However, after receiving an offer from Man Utd, he changed his mind and participated in two negotiations with the "Red Devils" representative.
To secure the services of the Portuguese coach, Man Utd must pay Sporting around $10.81 million in contract compensation, not to mention compensation for the assistant team that the coach plans to bring to Old Trafford. This number includes first-team coaches Emanuel Ferro, Adelio Candido and Carlos Fernandes, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital and fitness expert Paulo Barreira.
The Man Utd coaching position is vacant after Ten Hag was sacked on October 28 due to poor results. The 13-time Premier League champions are currently 14th with 11 points after 10 rounds.
