More than 670 people are believed to have died and an estimated 150 homes have been buried, according to Serhan Aktoprak, a United Nations official in the capital Port Moresby.
He assessed the situation as very bad as landslides continued. Flowing water posed a great danger to people in the area.
More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from Kaokalam, the official said, adding that people are using all means to remove bodies from the rubble.
Earlier, Papua New Guinea government officials announced that the disaster occurred in Kaokalam village in Porgera town of Enga province, about 600km northwest of the capital Port Moresby.
The landslide happened at around 3am on May 24 when many villagers were sleeping.
