What to do when you are about to lose your job?

The risk of losing a job excludes everyone, so instead of sitting around in fear, experts advise everyone to be proactive and ready to deal with it.

Set up a savings fund

Don’t wait until you’re fired to start saving. Everyone should have an emergency fund in place as soon as they have a bad feeling about their job. Of course, it’s hard to save enough money to last you through the entire period of unemployment, but even a small amount of savings can make life a lot less stressful.

When planning for a savings emergency, Jesse Mecham, founder of the spending management app YNAB (USA), advises you to ask the question: What will I do with this money? Maybe you saved up for a trip abroad in the past, but your current task is to have enough money to spend for at least 6 months.

If you're in debt, Mecham recommends reducing your monthly payments, if possible to the minimum. At the very least, this won't put you deeper into debt.

Update your resume (CV)

Updating your resume is recommended in any situation, but tailor your profile to suit different jobs and positions, advises Scott Dobrosky, a career expert at Indeed (USA). If necessary, leave some blank spaces to fill in important keywords that are relevant to the job you are applying for.

Also, review your professional skills. Each job requires different skills, if you plan to find a job in the old field, you should also strengthen them. If you intend to move to a new field, this is even more necessary.

Activate your network

Connecting with people in the industry and sharing with friends that you are (or will be) looking for a job is a solution that cannot be ignored.

Upgrade yourself

Learning a new skill or getting a new certification is always helpful even if you have no intention of changing jobs. Have a long-term plan and make yourself a potential candidate in your current or new industry. Don’t be afraid or procrastinate because there are countless free courses online that can help you learn more or get a certification.

If you have just lost your job, pay attention to the following.

Stay mentally healthy

Losing your job for any reason is a shock to any employee, but remember to stay calm and level-headed. "The more level-headed you are, the better your chances of finding a solution," Dobrosky advises.

Maintain the habit

When you lose your job, you suddenly have a lot of time, but don't let that make you lazy. Try to maintain the same schedule as when you were working, but instead do other activities such as exercising, going for a walk, meeting friends, having coffee, or submitting documents.

Review benefits

Have you received your severance pay? Have you filed for unemployment? How will your health insurance coverage change? Many people are so frustrated with being fired that they forget about this right.

Enhance communication and networking

Now is the time when you need your relationships more than ever. Tell your friends, acquaintances or close partners, share with them your abilities, your desires. If you are lucky, your period of unemployment will be much shorter.

Consider a temporary job

A temporary job during this period can be very helpful. It can help you make up for lost income, help you maintain social connections, and demonstrate to your new boss that you are ready for a job with high responsibility.
