In Khlong Sam Wa district, a suburb in northwestern Bangkok - where the alcohol poisoning incident occurred, Thai authorities discovered 19 illegal alcohol selling points along the road.
On August 28, at least 6 people died and more than 20 others had to go to the hospital for emergency treatment after drinking alcohol mixed with methanol in Thailand.
Authorities said the deaths occurred mainly in Khlong Sam Wa district, a suburb in northwestern Bangkok, where authorities discovered 19 illegal roadside liquor outlets.
Thailand, a predominantly Buddhist country, has strict regulations on alcohol, including limiting the hours of alcohol sales and banning alcohol sales on religious holidays.
However, these regulations have fostered the growth of a bootleg market for cheap alcohol, produced in unregulated distilleries.
Somwang Chaiprakraiwan, a top official in Khlong Sam Wa, said authorities had raided illegal liquor stores in the area and arrested those involved.
Bootleg alcohol is often spiked with methanol to increase its strength. Methanol can cause blindness, liver damage, and death in users.
