Nearly 200 people in Kallakurichi district, about 250 km from Chennai, the state capital, have been treated since June 19 for symptoms of vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea after drinking alcohol laced with methanol, a government official said on June 22.

Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation into the incident and arrested seven people. MS Prasanth, a senior district official, said the administration would take further action against local liquor establishments and breweries.

Homemade alcohol poisoning deaths are common in India. The Tamil Nadu state government said it was identifying people involved in the production of methanol, a toxic chemical commonly used in industry.
