The Israeli army said on October 18 that it had sent an additional unit to support forces operating in Jabalia - the largest of the eight historic refugee camps in the Gaza Strip.

Residents of Jabalia in northern Gaza said Israeli tanks had advanced into the center of the camp, using air and ground fire support and planting bombs that destroyed dozens of homes each day.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said it has been operating in Jabalia for the past two weeks, killing dozens of militants in a close-quarters battle on October 17, carrying out numerous airstrikes and destroying military infrastructure.

According to residents in Jabalia and two neighboring towns, communications and internet services were cut off, disrupting rescue operations by ambulance teams and the ability of people affected by Israeli operations to seek help.

Gaza health authorities reported that Israeli airstrikes on the Jaliba refugee camp killed at least 33 Palestinians, including 21 women, on the night of October 18.

The death toll is likely to rise to 50 as many people are still trapped under rubble and buildings.
