Similar to Android's Quick Look widget or Google's Pixel Stand display, your iPhone can display more useful information while charging.
iPhone 14 phones on display at Apple stores
According to a report by expert Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple is researching a new feature in the iOS 17 operating system to turn the iPhone's simple lock screen into a smart screen.
The new interface will display information like weather, calendar appointments, and other notifications when the phone is locked and rotated horizontally, Gurman noted.
The iPhone will display these widgets on a dark background with light text. That new feature can be useful when you have your iPhone on a desk or nightstand and want to stay up to date on any upcoming notifications or appointments.
Before Apple, Google introduced a similar feature for its Pixel phones. When you put your phone into sleep mode, you can access various settings or choose to display a slideshow of images from Google Photos while the device is charging.
The Pixel also comes with Google's At a Glance widget that shows the date, calendar appointments, air quality alerts, and a number of other useful notifications from the home and lock screens.
In addition, Mr. Gurman revealed that Apple is also researching to bring this feature to the iPad tablet, as well as developing a magnetic stand to support the device. Thanks to that, the iPad is able to compete better with the Google Pixel tablet.
Apple is expected to unveil new lock screen features alongside iOS 17 at its Worldwide Developers Conference next month. Other features expected to arrive in iOS 17 include a journaling app and an update to the Wallet app.
