The Group of Seven (G7) summit opened on the afternoon of June 13 (local time) at Borgo Egnazia, a resort near the town of Fasano in southern Italy.

This G7 summit was attended by leaders of countries such as Canada, the US, the UK, Italy, France, Germany, Japan as well as leaders of the European Council and the European Commission.

Other leaders invited to attend include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In addition, the guest list also includes a number of African leaders including Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Kenyan President William Ruto and Tunisian President Kais Saied.

Pope Francis will also attend this G7 Summit, marking the first time a pope has attended a G7 Summit.

Pope Francis is expected to give a speech on June 14 about the promises and risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and call for an end to current conflicts around the world.

Welcoming the G7 leaders to the conference, host country Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that this conference aims to convey a message of dialogue with the Southern Hemisphere and solidarity.

Ms. Meloni also compared the G7 to an ancient olive tree that is a symbol of the Puglia region with "solid roots and branches pointing to the future."

Running until June 15, the conference's agenda includes six sessions on African development and climate change, the situation in the Middle East, the conflict in Ukraine, migration, the Indo-Pacific region, and a special session focusing on AI and energy.

In his opening remarks, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the conference would conduct discussions and was expected to produce concrete and meaningful results.

This year's G7 summit comes amid recent European Parliament elections that have seen the far-right gaining influence across Europe and a worsening of politically-related violence in recent months.

The strictest security measures are being deployed in Italy before and during the conference.
