On the afternoon of the 29th of Tet, flower markets and places selling Tet ornamental plants hung signs offering huge discounts, and many small traders in Hanoi packed up their goods early to go home for New Year's Eve.

On the morning of January 29 (29th of Tet), on many streets in Hanoi such as To Huu (Ha Dong district), Lac Long Quan (Tay Ho district), Hoang Quoc Viet, Nghi Tam, traders are drastically reducing prices on Tet ornamental plants such as peach branches, kumquat trees, apricot blossoms, and yellow apricot blossoms, so that they can quickly pack up and go home to celebrate Tet early. In addition, many traders are cutting off peach branches themselves to avoid being forced to lower prices.

A yellow apricot vendor on Lac Long Quan Street (Tay Ho District) said: "This year I imported more than 100 yellow apricot trees to sell for Tet. Since the 27th of Tet, I had to hang a sign reducing the price from 600,000 VND/tree to 300,000 VND/tree. Up to today, I have only sold 1/3 of the yellow apricot trees. We have to spend more money to send the unsold apricot trees back to the South for care, and then sell them again for Tet next year."

Mr. Hoang Huy, a yellow apricot vendor on Nguyen Hoang Ton Street (Tay Ho District) said that this year the economy is difficult, people are tightening their spending, mainly choosing to buy small and cheaper ornamental plants, few people buy yellow apricot. "The first days of putting them on sale, I couldn't sell any trees, until I hung a clearance sale sign reducing the price from 5 million to 2 million VND, then to 1 million VND/tree, then I was able to sell them," said Mr. Huy.

Mr. Hoang shared after closing a deal on a yellow apricot tree for 1 million VND: "It wasn't until the 29th of Tet that I had time to go shopping for ornamental plants for my family. Today I was able to buy a yellow apricot tree for 1 million VND, while in the early days this apricot tree would have cost 5 - 6 million VND."

"This year, my peach garden has more than 100 peach trees. After more than 10 days of selling, we have only sold more than 30 trees. Now we have reduced the price from 1.8 million to 650,000 VND/tree to sell cheaply to people, so they can pack up and go home for Tet," said a peach seller.

Mr. Hung, a kumquat seller on Lac Long Quan Street (Tay Ho District) said: "This year, we brought more than 100 kumquat trees to sell during Tet with the initial price of 1.4 million VND/tree. Now we have lowered the price to 800,000 VND but have only sold a few dozen trees."
