Hai Duong copes with cold spell during Tet

This morning, the temperature in many areas of the province has dropped to 12-14 degrees Celsius, strong winds of level 3-4, light rain and drizzle.

The provincial Hydrometeorological Station forecasts that this strong northeast monsoon will last at least until January 29 (the first day of the Lunar New Year). The lowest temperature from January 27-29 (December 28 to the first day of the Lunar New Year) will continue to drop to 11-13 degrees Celsius, with severe cold.

Anticipating this severe cold spell early, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Hai Duong province has requested relevant departments, branches, districts, towns and cities in the province to focus on responding to ensure people's health and protect production.

Hai Duong Department of Health has requested provincial hospitals, medical centers of districts, towns and cities to fully prepare facilities, equipment, medicine and other necessary supplies to promptly provide emergency care, treatment and care for patients during the Tet holiday.

A representative of the Provincial General Hospital said that about 350 patients will stay for treatment during the Tet holiday. Many days ago, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province issued a document directing its affiliated units to strengthen inspection and guide farmers on measures to prevent severe cold and protect production.

On January 24, the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection inspected the production situation and recommended cold prevention for rice seedlings and vegetables in some localities. According to statistics, the whole province has sown 269 hectares of early spring rice seedlings, newly planted about 1,600 hectares of spring vegetables and about 6,150 hectares of other vegetables are ready to be harvested.

The Department recommends that localities provide guidance on covering with plastic, pumping water to keep warm, adding phosphate fertilizer, decomposed wood ash to prevent cold and absolutely not applying nitrogen fertilizer during these days. Prepare well the sources of short-term rice seeds in case of unusually cold weather that kills rice seedlings.

Urgently harvest the vegetable areas that are ready to be harvested to avoid damage and ensure vegetable supply for consumption during Tet. Actively care for, water sufficiently, fertilize in a balanced and sufficient amount to improve resistance and increase the cold resistance of newly planted vegetables.

According to Mr. Le Van Tung, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Hai Duong, the whole province currently has 5,400 buffaloes, 14,200 cows, 462,000 pigs and 17.8 million poultry.
