According to Newsweek, a Reddit account named Hippowned recently shared a photo of an aircraft that resembles the US B-2 stealth bomber with the caption: "A stealth bomber was "caught alive" by Google Maps."
The account also posted detailed coordinates showing the plane was flying over Davis Township, Missouri, where Whitemam Air Force Base is located. According to Google Maps, the photo was taken by Maxar Technologies, a company specializing in satellite imagery.
After being posted, the photo quickly attracted the attention of the online community with hundreds of thousands of views and thousands of comments. Account Acid_Taco wrote: "It doesn't seem to be invisible."
Another account named J_la commented: “I wonder who discovered this first.”
“It’s really cool to see how the satellite captured a color image,” said user Quarterpie3141. The color effect on the photo shows how fast the plane was flying and how quickly the satellite captured the image.
According to the Airforce Technology news site, the US military has about 21 B-2 stealth aircraft stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. This type of aircraft can travel at subsonic speeds at altitudes of more than 15,000 meters.
This isn’t the first time a B-2 has been spotted on Google Maps. In September, images of a B-2 lying on its side on the grass at Whiteman Air Force Base were widely shared on social media. The US military later confirmed that the aircraft had encountered a problem during a training exercise and had to make an emergency landing at Whiteman.
The B-2 is a long-range, strategic bomber equipped with stealth technology and capable of carrying nuclear bombs. Most of the US B-2 aircraft are based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. The cost of a B-2 is about more than 1 billion USD.
