Leaked Google salary spreadsheet shows software engineers earning more than $1 million a year.
Google employees' base salaries are divided by level, from 2 to 11. Business Insider said it is keeping a list of 2022 salaries of the company's 12,000 full-time employees in the US up to level 7.
Most engineers earn a base salary of $100,000 to $375,000 a year. The highest paid on the list is a Level 7 software engineer, with a base salary of $718,000. With a bonus of $605,000, this position earns up to $1.3 million, placing it in the top 1% of earners in the U.S., according to SmartAsset data.
Coming in second on the list are engineering managers at $400,000, followed by direct sales people and legal advisors at $377,000 and $320,000, respectively.
Also receiving over $300,000 are user experience designers, public policy staff, research scientists, cloud sales staff, and program managers.
Data scientists earn between $120,000 and $254,000. Meanwhile, the lowest paid at Google is a technical executive with a base salary of $47,000, $1,000 less than a technical intern.

Sundar Pichai, 51 years old, CEO of Alphabet
According to the New York Post, the employee's income is many times lower than that of Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, Google's parent company. Each year, he has a base salary of $2 million, a stock award of $218 million, plus $6 million in additional benefits from a pension plan or the cost of using a plane for personal purposes.
According to Salary.com, the average salary of a technology engineer in the US is $77,433 a year. Experts say that Google's generous salary for engineers is to retain talent and prevent them from leaving for competitors. However, this has led to a situation where some Google employees work less and receive high salaries, while a series of startups cannot find enough human resources.
On July 18, Twitter user @nearcyan mentioned a Google engineer who earns $500,000 a year despite working only two hours a day. The tweet quickly attracted the attention of the community. Among them, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also expressed his surprise with the word "wow". However, the majority believe that engineers lack passion for their work. "In any field, if you only work two hours a day, you are not really passionate about your career," commented one Twitter user.
In March, Keith Rabois, CEO of OpenStore, criticized tech companies for hiring too much, leaving thousands of employees who just show up to the office, attend meetings, and do nothing. And Brit Levy, a former Meta employee, said companies are simply hiring employees like “Pokemon cards.”
