Stanley Zhong and his father last month filed successive lawsuits against the University of California system and the US Department of Education, accusing these institutions of racial discrimination in admissions.

The incident happened two years ago. Out of the two million people who took the SAT (standardized test), Stanley was in the top 1% of the world with a score of 1,590/1,600. In school, his cumulative (weighted) GPA was 4.42/4. The reason is that some advanced courses are graded from 0 to 5. Therefore, students who take these classes can achieve a weighted cumulative GPA higher than the standard (4).

Additionally, Stanley tutors underprivileged children and founded and operates Rabbit-Sign, which provides free electronic signing services.

With such an impressive resume, many people thought that Stanley was sure to get into a prestigious university. However, he was unexpectedly rejected by 16 of the 18 schools he applied to.

Stanley then joined Google as a full-time software engineer, which became a topic of national debate about the college admissions process.

Stanley's rejection list includes schools in the University of California system: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB. The rest are Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Georgia Tech, MIT, Stanford, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, University of Washington and University of Wisconsin.

Stanley’s father, Nan Zhong, said many Asian students reported being rejected despite their excellent qualifications. In addition, the father and son gathered evidence of a clear restriction on Asians, even though the community is growing strongly in California.

This is the second lawsuit this year alleging discrimination in admissions by the University of California system.
