Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most devices, nor will it be available for download from the app store, later this year.
Google will continue to upgrade its Assistant to Gemini on mobile devices in the coming months, Brian Marquardt, senior product manager at Google DeepMind, said on March 14. Assistant will no longer be accessible on most devices and will no longer be available for download from the app store by the end of the year.
However, smartphones running Android 9 or earlier, with less than 2GB of RAM, will continue to run the old, native Assistant.
Google will also bring Gemini to tablets, cars, and connected devices like headphones and watches, Marquardt added. “We’ll bring new experiences, built on Gemini’s capabilities, to home devices like TVs and speakers. Details will be announced in the coming months. Assistant will continue to work on these devices until then,” he said.
Google Assistant was first introduced at the Google I/O 2016 Developer Conference. When it first launched, the virtual assistant was integrated into the Google Allo messaging app and the Google Home smart speaker, then appeared on the Google Pixel, Pixel XL before appearing on many other smart devices.
