New generation Ford Everest and Ranger Raptor recalled due to sudden stop problem

According to Vietnamnet September 5, 2023 19:47

An error related to the electronic gear lever on the Ford Everest and Ranger Raptor caused the vehicle to suddenly stop while moving without the rear brake lights coming on, forcing the company to issue a recall in Australia.

Recently, Ford Australia had to announce a recall of more than 4,800 vehicles of the 2021-2023 Ford Everest and Ford Ranger Raptor models due to errors related to the e-Shifter electronic gear lever.

The announcement comes after the American automaker confirmed a problem reported by many owners of the new generation Ford Everest and Ford Ranger (including the Ranger Raptor variant) in Australia, where the vehicle suddenly stops while moving. The cases of this problem mainly fall on models equipped with electronic gearshift.

The recall notice sent by Ford Australia to the Department of Infrastructure states the reason: "Due to a software issue, in certain circumstances, if the battery voltage drops below a critical threshold, the gearshift may automatically shift into P mode when the vehicle is travelling at speeds below 6km/h. This may cause the vehicle to stop suddenly without the rear brake lights illuminating as intended."

“Sudden stops while driving at low speeds and the rear brake lights not illuminating as intended can increase the risk of a crash, resulting in injury or death to the vehicle occupants and other road users,” the notice states.

Meanwhile, a Ford Australia spokesperson said the only cases subject to recall are Ford Ranger and Everest models equipped with the 2.0 Bi-Turbo engine with e-Shifter electronic gear lever.

"On these affected vehicles, the powertrain control module (PCM) software may limit the charging output of the alternator in certain circumstances. The recall will not require any component replacement to resolve the issue, but will instead require a PCM software update," a Ford Australia spokesperson stressed.

Ford Australia has now released a list of VIN identification numbers for 4,841 Ford Everest, Ranger and Ranger Raptor vehicles involved in this recall, and is advising owners to contact their Ford authorised dealer for free inspection and repair.

In Australia, most of the new generation Ford Everest, Ranger and Ranger Raptor are imported from Ford’s factory in Thailand, which also supplies many markets in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to the Australian market, the Philippines market has also recorded a very small number of cases related to this issue.

In Vietnam, Ford cars imported from Thailand only include the 7-seat SUV Ford Everest and the high-performance pickup truck Ford Ranger Raptor. Ford Everest is being sold in 5 versions, but only 2 versions, Wildtrak 2.0L AT 4x4 and Titanium+ 2.0L AT 4x4, are equipped with a 2.0 Bi-Turbo engine and e-Shifter electronic gear lever.

However, there have been no reports of any complaints about the above error in Ford car user groups. VietNamNet will continue to update information related to this incident after receiving new announcements from Ford Vietnam.
