The European Council on May 14 announced its decision to expand the scope of European Union (EU) sanctions against Iran, citing reasons such as Tehran's support for Russia in the conflict in Ukraine.

Israel's Iron Dome air defense system was activated in Jerusalem to intercept drones and missiles from Iran on the evening of April 13, 2024.

The European Council statement stressed that after Iran continued to militarily support Russia in the conflict in Ukraine, support for non-state armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region, as well as conducting drone and missile attacks on Israel on April 13, the EU expanded its restrictive measures against Iran, including missile manufacturing activities.

Established in July 2023, the EU's restrictive measures framework on Iran currently prevents the export of components needed to build UAVs from the EU to Iran. In addition, the EU imposes travel restrictions on EU countries and asset freezes on individuals involved in Iran's UAV program. In addition, the provision of funds or economic resources, directly or indirectly, to or for the benefit of natural or legal persons, institutions or bodies on the EU's "blacklist" is also prohibited.

Earlier, on April 22, EU foreign ministers agreed in principle to expand sanctions against Iran. Responding via social media on April 23, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said it was regrettable to see the EU quickly decide to impose additional illegal restrictions on Iran just because Iran exercised its right to self-defense.
