The People's Committee of Binh Lieu district (Quang Ninh) has decided to suspend teacher Chu Thi Linh Trang from teaching to verify and clarify her responsibility related to a second grade student being physically impacted.
Previously, at around 3:00 p.m. on April 9, 2024, while doing homework in the second period of math class 2, at Na Nhai school - Vo Ngai Primary School (Vo Ngai commune, Binh Lieu district), Ms. Chu Thi Linh Trang guided, but student Phun Thao Ly could not do it, could not concentrate. Ms. Trang reminded but failed, then used a ruler to hit student Phun Thao Ly on the head. This student studied normally, but at the end of the class, her eyes showed signs of swelling.
At 5:15 p.m. the same day, Phun Thao Ly's family discovered that her eyes were swollen and her head hurt, and called her homeroom teacher to inform her. Ly's family and teacher then took her to Binh Lieu District Medical Center for examination and treatment; then she was taken to Quang Ninh Provincial General Hospital.
On the evening of April 9, Vo Ngai Primary School sent a working group to Binh Lieu District Medical Center to visit Ly and encourage her family. Teacher Chu Thi Linh Trang apologized to the family and pledged to pay for the hospital fees, support and care for the student. According to the test results of Quang Ninh General Hospital, Ly did not suffer brain damage, only swelling of the soft tissue of her head and eyes on both sides.
On April 11, 2024, the District People's Committee issued Decision No. 539/QD-UBND suspending teacher Chu Thi Linh Trang from teaching to verify and clarify her responsibilities in the incident.
The District People's Committee has directed specialized agencies, functional forces, the People's Committee of Vo Ngai commune and the school to continue to inspect and verify the incident; at the same time, organize visits and care for students; coordinate with parents to handle related issues. Units and localities continue to implement regulations on school safety, not allowing acts of school violence, violations of teachers' ethics, and violations of the law by teachers and students.
