Located about 150km from Ho Chi Minh City, Nam Cat Tien is a nature reserve recognized by UNESCO as a “World Biosphere Reserve” in Vietnam. The national park is located in 5 districts of Tan Phu, Vinh Cuu, Cat Tien, Bao Lam and Bu Dang, Dong Nai province; possessing extremely rich flora and fauna and is home to many rare species.

Regarding butterflies, Nam Cat Tien gathers more than 450 species, including native species and migratory butterflies from other places. Statistics show that the number of butterfly species in the national park is 50% more than the species recorded in Vietnam. The most abundant is the tropical butterfly system of Vinh Cuu Nature Reserve, including the Bien Hoa silver butterfly, endemic to Dong Nai. The most prominent is the rare swallowtail butterfly listed in the Red Book.

Every year, when the first rains of the season begin, the Nam Cat Tien forest is filled with swarms of butterflies. On the nearly 10km long path through the forest, you can see countless swarms of butterflies flying across or landing, covering the path. In the wetter areas, with stagnant water, butterflies gather in greater numbers.
