Binh Phuoc played below their best but defeated Hue 1-0 thanks to a shining moment from striker Nguyen Cong Phuong in round 5 of the First Division.
The A stands of Tu Do Stadium were packed today - a rare sight in many years. Mainly because the away team had many famous names such as goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong, Sam Ngoc Duc, Huynh Tan Sinh, Nguyen Thanh Binh and especially Cong Phuong. Before the match, some home fans lined up to welcome the former Hoang Anh Gia Lai striker and his teammates.
However, the match on the field was not as exciting as they expected. Binh Phuoc players played incoherently and did not make much of an impression. In the first 45 minutes, the away team did not even have a single shot on Hue's goal.
On the contrary, with an average age of less than 21, Hue lacked experience but had plenty of youth. They defended quite strongly, preventing most of the coordination or individual techniques of the away players. The home team also had many dangerous counter-attacks but were not sharp enough to defeat goalkeeper Tan Truong.
The second half was similar as Hue defended well and counterattacked dangerously. In the 64th minute, Hoang Quan shot from a distance, forcing Tan Truong to fly as far as he could to save the goal.
After several other failed chances, Hue paid a heavy price. In the 74th minute, from a harmless high ball, 19-year-old defender Vu Quoc Anh missed his header, allowing Cong Phuong to find the opportunity. The Nghe An striker used his speed to sweep the ball and then shot diagonally into Hue's net. That was also the only shot on target the away team had in the match.
After the goal, Cong Phuong raised his fist as usual to celebrate. This was his second consecutive goal and his fourth in the First Division for Binh Phuoc. Cong Phuong's contribution helped Binh Phuoc maintain second place with four wins and one draw, two points less than Ninh Binh.
However, this performance is not convincing enough for coach Kim Sang-sik to include Cong Phuong back in the Vietnam team to prepare for the AFF Cup 2024 (new name is ASEAN Cup 2024). "The team list is available, the best players have been selected by the coach. That is also a good thing for the team. I hope Vietnam will have a successful ASEAN Cup in the near future," Cong Phuong said after the Hue match.
