Thailand's Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) has just released data estimating that about 160,000 hectares of land spread across 10 northern provinces of the country were devastated by forest fires from February 19-25.

GISTDA said the fires were likely caused by local people burning their fields before planting and after harvesting. The 10 provinces most affected were Tak, Lampang, Chiang Mai, Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Phitsanulok, Uttaradit and Kamphaeng Phet. The agency said most of the locations thought to be at risk of fires were in protected areas in national parks and agricultural zones, and vowed to develop measures to combat the “fires”.

Based on satellite information, GISTDA said that on February 22 alone, there were 1,532 hotspots across Thailand, with Kanchanaburi province having the most hotspots with 221. Regionally, the agency also said there were 1,485 hotspots in Myanmar, 851 in Laos, 833 in Cambodia and 595 in Vietnam.
