Doctor Duong Minh Tuan, Department of Endocrinology - Diabetes, Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi) said that he had just admitted patient PVT (68 years old, in Hanoi) to the hospital with a severe infected ulcer on his left foot, with a history of diabetes for 10 years.

Notably, upon admission to the hospital, the patient's feet and ankles smelled foul and had to be tied in a nylon bag to limit the unpleasant smell.

About 6 months ago, Mr. T. had symptoms of numbness in his hands and feet, so he went to a traditional healer for treatment using electroacupuncture. Due to a loss of sensation to heat, he did not realize he had been burned after treatment. However, the man was subjective, did not go to the hospital for examination but only cared for the wound at home, leading to the infection spreading from his foot to his ankle, facing a very high risk of amputation.

According to Dr. Duong Minh Tuan, people who are susceptible to foot complications due to diabetes often have had the disease for a long time; poor blood sugar control; foot deformities such as ingrown toenails, calluses, stiff joints...

Therefore, Dr. Tuan said that diabetic patients need to know how to take care of their feet. This is very important to prevent complications, especially foot ulcers.
