Despite a request for trial in absentia, former investigator Hoang Van Hung was still escorted by police to the courthouse on the morning of December 25.

On December 25, the High People's Court in Hanoi opened an appeal hearing on the "rescue flight" case to consider the appeals of 21 defendants and those with related rights and obligations. The trial lasted for 4 days and was chaired by Judge Mai Anh Tai (Chief of the Economic Court, High People's Court in Hanoi). Nearly 30 lawyers registered to defend the defendants as well as those with related rights and obligations.

According to the reporter's records, at about 7:40 a.m. the same day, three specialized vehicles escorted 21 defendants to court.

Before the trial, former investigator Hoang Van Hung submitted a request to be tried in absentia. However, this morning, defendant Hung was still escorted to court.

Two days before the appeal hearing opened (December 23), Hoang Van Hung's lawyer said that the defendant had just submitted a petition to the court to plead guilty, and at the same time, he had influenced and asked relatives and friends to pay 18.8 billion VND on his behalf to remedy the consequences of the case.

During the first instance trial, defendant Hung always denied the indictment against him, saying that he did not receive a particularly large amount of money from the defendants involved in the case.

At the end of the first instance trial, the Hanoi People's Court affirmed that although the defendant Hung did not plead guilty, there was sufficient evidence to determine that the defendant Hung had fraudulently appropriated property worth 800,000 USD (equivalent to 18.8 billion VND) and decided to sentence the defendant Hung to life in prison according to the crime he was prosecuted for.

Previously, the Hanoi People's Court held the first-instance trial of the "rescue flight" case, sentencing defendant Hoang Van Hung to life in prison for fraud and appropriation of property; defendant Tran Minh Tuan to 18 years in prison for two crimes of fraud and appropriation of property and bribery. During the trial, both repeatedly pleaded not guilty, affirming that they did not commit the crimes as accused by the prosecution.

Three former officials and cadres were sentenced to life in prison for bribery, including: Nguyen Thi Huong Lan, Pham Trung Kien and Vu Anh Tuan.

Several former high-ranking officials of ministries, sectors and localities were sentenced for bribery, such as: To Anh Dung, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, 16 years in prison; Chu Xuan Dung, former Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, 3 years in prison; Tran Van Tan, former Vice Chairman of the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee, 6 years in prison; Nguyen Quang Linh, former Secretary of the Permanent Deputy Prime Minister, 7 years in prison; Tran Van Du, former Deputy Director of the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Public Security, 7 years in prison...
