Hai Duong City needs a signboard summarizing the history of Thanh Dong so that people can better understand the place where they live.

Map of the Eastern Citadel in 1804

According to historical sources, the ancient Dong Citadel (today's Hai Duong City) was built in the year of Giap Ty (1804) at the confluence of Ke Sat River and Thai Binh River in the area of Binh Lao Trang, Han Giang, Han Thuong by the governor Tran Cong Hien with the goal of both being a citadel and guarding the east of Thang Long citadel.

The Eastern Citadel was originally built of earth, hexagonal in shape, with a guard post at each corner, and four gates (East, West, South, North). When the French colonialists invaded our country, the Nguyen Dynasty kings reinforced the citadel by adding four more gates called the outer citadel. In early 1873, the citadel was occupied by the French colonialists, but at the end of that year they returned it to the military.

In 1883, the French colonialists entered by waterway along the Ke Sat River, forcing our army to flee to Mao Dien, and the citadel fell into the hands of the French colonialists. In 1889, the French colonialists destroyed the Eastern Citadel, leaving only a few vestiges.

The ancient Dong Citadel is the pride of the people of Hai Duong City, but many local people have only heard of this citadel without knowing its exact location or history.

I think Hai Duong City should research and consider making a signboard out of stone or other durable and beautiful materials, with a brief history of Thanh Dong written in a suitable place, contributing to helping generations, especially students, understand more about their homeland. If this can be done, this will be a practical activity towards the 220th anniversary of Thanh Dong's founding.
