A major concern in medical training today is the shortage of doctors in certain specialties such as infectious diseases, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and intensive care.
Central Psychiatric Hospital 1 dispenses medicine to patients
Professor Le Ngoc Thanh - Principal of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hanoi National University), former Director of Hospital E, expressed a major concern in the current training of the medical and pharmaceutical sector, which is the shortage of doctors in some specific specialties such as infectious diseases, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and intensive care.
“We are very concerned that each year the school enrolls up to 500-600 students, but after 1-2 years of study, when choosing majors, many students choose hot majors such as aesthetics, dentistry, general medicine, obstetrics... while majors such as infectious diseases, psychiatry, forensic medicine, pathology, resuscitation... are rarely chosen by students,” said Professor Thanh.
According to Professor Thanh, the above majors are not chosen by students because through research and consultation, students know that these majors are hard but the income is low, and the allowance is not much. Due to the low income, not being able to work extra while the work is hard, recruiting doctors for these majors is very difficult.
For example, during the outbreak of COVID-19 in the southern provinces, intensive care for critically ill patients revealed many limitations when there were localities in the whole province with only 2 doctors specializing in resuscitation or a lack of medical staff specializing in infectious diseases when fighting the epidemic...
Therefore, Professor Thanh recommends that the Government and relevant agencies need to review policies to attract human resources and reduce the shortage of doctors in some specific specialties as well as need special mechanisms in terms of salaries and other benefits. "Not only increasing the allowance level, doctors in the above-mentioned specialties need a separate mechanism, such as being considered for the highest salary, 4-5 times higher than specialties such as internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and pediatrics, dermatology, etc.," Professor Thanh emphasized.
Professor Thanh said that with the desire to improve the quality of training, meet the requirements of society and international integration, medical universities are innovating their training programs. The University of Medicine and Pharmacy (National University) was built on the foundation of a leading university in the country, receiving the help of leading specialized hospitals, training students with a good foundation of basic knowledge and clinical skills.
Recently, in early November 2022, the Prime Minister decided to transfer the Construction Hospital to Hanoi National University to reorganize it into the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital under Hanoi National University.
Construction Hospital will become University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and will operate under a new name from December 2022, with a scale of 500 beds. In addition to the task of medical examination and treatment, this will be a facility to promote practical training, research, technology transfer in the field of medicine, biomedicine and pharmacy, improve the capacity to provide health care services, medical examination and treatment for students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
In addition to this hospital, Mr. Thanh said that Hanoi National University has had the idea of forming a medical complex from the current framework of the University and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, including a hospital system, high-tech specialized clinics, public-private partnerships... with many mechanisms and dynamic methods to serve teaching and health care for the community.
Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, was established on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (operating since 2012), and will become Hanoi University of Medicine and Pharmacy by 2020.
The school currently has over 2,000 students and over 200 lecturers and official staff, not to mention medical experts working at hospitals. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school will enroll 550 students in various majors.
