Three reasons why the standard score of the academic transcript is almost 30

There are majors that only recruit a few students based on their academic records, and add 1-4 priority points, while high school teachers create favorable conditions for students in terms of scores, which is the reason why the entrance score is close to 30 in many schools.

Candidates take the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment test at the University of Science, April 7.

Last week, the Banking Academy announced the standard score for high school transcripts for a series of majors with a score of 29.9, such as Auditing, Banking, Finance, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Economic Law... This is the average score of all high school years of three subjects according to the combination and priority and incentive points (1.5-3 points).

With the same admission score calculation method, but the maximum priority score is 1, the University of Commerce takes the standard score of 25 or higher. Of which, Logistics and Supply Chain Management is the highest with 29.25 points, Marketing, International Business, E-commerce all take 29.

Foreign Trade University also has two majors with a benchmark score of 30/34: Digital Marketing, Integrated Marketing Communications (international career orientation program); Logistics and Supply Chain Management with a benchmark score of 29/30.

At Hanoi Law University, the standard score for Economic Law is 30, and for International Trade Law is 29.8. Meanwhile, Can Tho University has a standard score of 29.6 for Mathematics Education, and many other majors are above 29.

The Foreign Language University announced the standard score for the transcript based on the average of the subjects, the highest being 9.4/10. Candidates must be students of specialized schools or high schools under the Hanoi National University, and pass the interview round.

According to university admissions representatives and high school teachers, there are three main reasons why the standard score for academic records is almost absolutely high.

The first is the small quota. Master Nguyen Quang Trung, Deputy Head of Training Management Department, University of Commerce, said that the number of candidates admitted based on academic records only accounts for about 5% of the school's total quota in recent years. For example, there is a major that recruits 100 students, but only 5 students are admitted based on academic records. Therefore, the standard score will be high.

The situation is similar at the University of Foreign Languages. According to Dr. Hoa Ngoc Son, Vice Principal, this year is the first time the school will recruit students based on academic records, reserving about 10-20% of the target. This level is equivalent to 3-10 students in some majors.

"The quota for this method is quite small, while the number of candidates is large, all of whom are excellent students from specialized classes across the country," said Mr. Son.

The second reason is that schools often have additional bonus points, in addition to regional and target priority points according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

For example, Foreign Trade University adds a maximum of 4 points to students who win first prize in the national excellent student competition. If they win a provincial prize, they will receive a maximum of 2 points.

At the University of Commerce, Mr. Trung said that the new score this year is that the school adds 1 point for specialized students. Therefore, the standard score for most majors increased by 1-2 points.

Finally, according to some high school homeroom teachers, because universities consider admission based on academic records, they are open-minded and create favorable conditions for students regarding their scores.

"Many students may not have decided on a major yet, but they have determined their combination quite early. Therefore, if they are unlucky in 1-2 tests and want to take another test to make up for their score, we have no difficulty," said a teacher.

Regarding the opinion that high academic standards can cause injustice or inaccurate student evaluation, Dr. Tran Manh Ha, Head of Training Department of Banking Academy, said it is not a cause for concern.

He assessed that all successful candidates have excellent abilities and academic achievements. Those who pass with their academic records often win prizes in provincial and national competitions for excellent students.

"This group can also be admitted through many other methods, such as considering academic records combined with certificates, combining test scores to assess thinking, ability or graduation scores," he said.

In 2023, more than 546,000 candidates will enroll in universities. Of these, 30% will be admitted based on their academic records, or about 164,000 students. This rate is similar to previous years.
