With 75 years of Party membership, for three-quarters of a century since receiving the light of the revolution, Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Van Mai in Bich Cam village, Quang Phuc commune, Tu Ky district (Hai Duong) have always maintained their steadfast faith in the Party.

Welcome the light of revolution

This year, Mr. Mai and his wife are both at a rare age, 95 years old. This spring, Mr. Mai and his wife are even happier and more proud when they have the honor of receiving the 75-year Party membership badge. With stable health and a clear mind, Mr. Mai still clearly remembers the important milestones of his life. He slowly told us about his life as if rewinding old but still clear film footage.

Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Van Mai said they were very honored and proud to receive the 75-year Party membership badge.

Born into poverty like many other families before the revolution, with many siblings, Mr. Mai was sent by his parents to work as a servant for a landlord in the commune since he was young. Fortunately, Quang Phuc was a land that soon welcomed the light of the revolution. This was where the first Party cell of Tu Ky district was established on December 1, 1945. That is why, from his teenage years, Mr. Mai was able to join his fathers and uncles in the activities of the Viet Minh forces. "Once, when I followed my elders to capture the Japanese rice warehouse, I was able to carry a basket of rice home," Mr. Mai recalled.

At that time, in Mai's mind, he always thought that only by following the revolution would his life be brighter. That wish was always burning, urging him, so in 1946, when he was just 18 years old, Mai decided to write an application and meet the comrade in charge of youth work of the Viet Minh District Committee of Tu Ky District to ask to join the force. Seeing Mai's will and determination, the organization agreed to accept him. Mai was healthy and agile, so he was assigned to participate in the task of information and communication.

The boundless joy of Mr. Mai's family when he and his wife both reached a high age and were awarded the 75-year Party membership badge.

"One of the first tasks I was assigned was to deliver the organization's documents from Quang Khai commune to comrade La Van Quynh in La Tinh village (now La Tinh Bac area, Tu Ky town). As requested, to ensure secrecy, I was not allowed to take a boat but had to swim across the river, find the house and hand it to comrade Quynh. After completing the task, I found out that the document I delivered was a portrait of Karl Marx and Lenin. This was also a challenge from the organization for me to prove my ability," Mr. Mai recalled.

After many times of successfully completing their tasks, on the evening of November 10, 1947, Mr. Mai and his comrade named Tuan in Nhu Tinh (Quang Khai commune) were honored to stand in the ranks of the Party in a solemnly held admission ceremony.

In life and death

During the years of resistance against the French, Mr. Mai and his comrades were tasked with transporting letters and transporting cadres between the free zones and the enemy-occupied zones. To ensure the safety of the cadres and to ensure the smooth communication of the revolution, Mr. Mai and his comrades had to face danger many times.

Mr. Mai and his wife emotionally recounted to reporters their memories of their youth.

"Around 1951, I participated in leading a Central working delegation from Xuan Neo commune to cross the enemy-occupied area in Phuong Ky commune. After a few warning shots from my comrades in the delegation but seeing no sign of the enemy, I was assigned to go ahead to scout. When I was walking to a civilian's yard, I was surrounded and captured by the enemy. They tied my hands and hung me from a tree, then dragged me into a pond to drown me for interrogation, but I insisted that I was just a farmer who had accidentally been captured. After being detained for ten days and forced to do odd jobs, one time I had to follow them on a sweep in An Thanh commune, taking advantage of the enemy's negligence, I escaped back to the base to continue my mission," Mr. Mai recounted.

The most haunting moment for Mr. Mai up to now is the enemy's siege in Quang Khai commune. At that time, he and four other comrades named Co, Tan, Duoc, and Dan were holding out in the area, maintaining communication between inside and outside the district, when the enemy suddenly entered the village to ambush. With no other choice, all five of them had to flee to the fields, hiding in the rice fields to escape the siege. Mr. Mai's voice dropped, recalling: "When the enemy fired, we lay down, when they stopped firing, we ran as fast as we could to get out of their range. In the end, only I escaped, while the other comrades were all sacrificed."

Later, it was Mr. Mai who confirmed to complete the documents to help his fallen comrades receive the recognition they deserved.

Old age, high ambition

From 1954, he moved to the Provincial Post Office and then to the Vietnam Post Office. During 35 years of dedication to the postal industry in many different positions, Mr. Mai always completed the assigned tasks well. In 1989, Mr. Mai retired according to the regime. Before retiring, he worked as Secretary of the Hai Hung Postal Industry Union.

Sitting and talking with us, Mrs. Le Thi Cung, Mrs. Mai's wife, only occasionally repeated her husband's questions that he did not hear clearly. For 70 years since they became husband and wife, she has always been a silent and solid supporter for Mrs. Mai and her family. Still possessing the lively and calm demeanor of a veteran party member, Mrs. Cung was once a core, always enthusiastic, leading the guerrilla movement and working in the locality. In 1948, Mrs. Cung was honored to be admitted to the Party and was one of the first women in the Commune Party Committee. Before retiring to take care of the family so that her husband could work with peace of mind, Mrs. Cung was the Team Leader of the Quang Phuc Cooperative's Production Team. Her husband often worked away from home, and she single-handedly took care of the fields and raised her children.

Time flies, two of the early party members of Tu Ky district have now lived nearly a century with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although they are getting older, their will is getting stronger, and their health is getting weaker, but their enthusiasm and revolutionary qualities have never diminished. For many years, Mr. Mai and his wife have been regularly participating in party cell activities. On healthy days, they go for a walk together, and on days when they are slightly sick or when it is rainy or windy, they ask their children and grandchildren to take them to the village cultural house to attend.

Comrade Nguyen Van Nang, Party Cell Secretary and Head of Bich Cam Village, said: “The comrades are rarely absent from Party cell meetings. In every meeting, the two elders actively speak up and participate with very enthusiastic and responsible opinions. The enthusiastic and thoughtful opinions of the old comrades are very valuable, contributing significantly to creating consensus among cadres, party members and people in carrying out local work, especially in building new rural areas in the commune. In daily life, the exemplary and responsible actions of the two elders are a shining example for children and grandchildren in the family, party members and local people to learn and follow.”

“I realize that it is not simply a matter of waiting for the appointment to come again, but that we must constantly have the spirit and will to study, practice the ideals, qualities, ethics, and lifestyle of a Party member”; “I promise to continuously study, practice, cultivate, maintain faith and loyalty to the Party as well as preserve the qualities and qualifications of a Party member”. Those are the lines in the handwritten speech of Mr. Mai and Mr. Cung on the occasion of receiving the 75-year Party membership badge.

With their ears still sharp and their eyes still sharp, Mr. Mai and his wife often read newspapers, listen to the radio, and watch television to keep up with current events. Sharing with us, Mr. Mai and his wife said that what they are most passionate about right now is the work of building and rectifying the Party and the political system of our Party. “With the determination to fight corruption and negativity with the spirit of no forbidden zones, no exceptions, regardless of who that person is, we believe that our Party will become increasingly cleaner and stronger,” Mr. Mai affirmed.

According to comrade Nguyen Van Thuoc, Party Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Phuc commune, the dedication, perseverance and high prestige of the couple Mai is very valuable to the Party Committee of the commune. "Both of them are senior members of the Party, many years old, but always enthusiastic and devoted to the work in the locality. When the commune has important matters, we always come to consult the elders. When the elders acknowledge the work of the commune, we are excited, but when we are reminded, we also have to consider and adjust accordingly," comrade Nguyen Van Thuoc shared more.

Mr. Mai and his wife have 4 children who are also party members and are all grown up. In their extended family, there are currently 13 party members. As a matter of course, the revolutionary fire and belief in the Party have been nurtured and passed on by generations in Mr. Mai's family.

Having met and talked with Mr. Mai and his wife, what we really admire about the two 75-year-old Party members is their revolutionary enthusiasm, their steadfastness, and their unwavering faith in the Party that has never diminished over the years. The two old comrades are truly shining examples for later Party members to look up to and improve upon.
