5 steps to protect network security for businesses

Cyber security is a top concern for businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, as the Lunar New Year approaches.

Below are recommendations from Kaspersky experts (a large and famous security software manufacturer and distributor in the world) on 5 steps to protect businesses from cyber attacks.

Backup important data

The sudden loss of important data files can be caused by a hard drive failure or a cyber attack, an example of which is a ransomware attack. They encrypt the entire operating system or individual files and demand a ransom to decrypt them.

What’s worse is that even if the ransom is paid, there’s no guarantee that the criminals will recover sensitive documents. Regular offline backups will allow access to important data in an emergency.

Software and device updates

Legacy software is a security hole, providing attackers with a great opportunity to break into a company's database.

Before the long holidays, don't forget to check for and install new updates on all major applications. This process can be simplified with security solutions with integrated patch management systems.

Change Password

One method that involves guessing a password by trying all possible character combinations is Brute force - a type of cyber attack in which a hacker has a software that cycles through different character combinations to create a correct password.

The likelihood of this attack method being successful increases when the user password is weak, easy to guess, or has been leaked. The first recommendation to reduce the likelihood of data theft is to implement a strong password policy, requiring standard user account passwords to contain at least 8 letters, 1 number, uppercase and lowercase letters, and 1 special character.

Check access to enterprise data systems

Make a list of employees who have left the company this year and check to see if access has been revoked. Also, reduce the number of people with access to important data, and reduce the amount of data available to all employees.

Beware of scam traps

Remember and remind your colleagues of the basic signs of a phishing email. Also, always check the format of any attachments and the accuracy of the links before opening them. Hover over them, don't click them, and make sure the attachments aren't in exe format.
