Tran Ngoc Quynh Giang, a third-year student at Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City campus II, won a special prize at the 2024 National Mathematics Olympiad for Students and Pupils.
The 30th National Mathematics Olympiad for Students and Pupils was organized by the Vietnam Mathematical Society in collaboration with the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The university block has 699 students from 95 schools registered to take the exam. The high school block has 400 students from 46 high schools participating.
Tran Ngoc Quynh Giang (3rd year student) is the only female student to win the special prize with the best results in algebra and analysis.
Tran Ngoc Quynh Giang said she has been passionate about math since she was a child, so when she had the opportunity to take the exam in college, she registered right away.
"At first, I just thought of taking a test to see how much knowledge I still remembered, but unexpectedly I got a high score. I reviewed all the algebra and analysis knowledge in about 4 months, I felt surprised and happy even though I didn't dare to expect much" - Giang added.
Quynh Giang said that although her study and review schedule is quite busy, studying at school during the day, tutoring students in the afternoon, and practicing online with teachers at night, she still tries to balance it to pursue her passion.
"When I joined the school team, my teachers trained me very hard, each subject was reviewed in 10 sessions. On average, I solved about 5 exercises a day. I think to be good at math, you have to practice, review and solve problems a lot.
In addition to my time in class, I also tutor middle and high school students. Teaching helps me nurture my passion for math and earn extra income to help my parents live a less stressful life" - Quynh Giang shared.
"To me, math is very mysterious. When exposed to it, I feel that I am trained to think better, not only in the subject but also in practice. Studying foreign economics will not apply math knowledge as deeply as those studying natural sciences, but I feel that I am trained to reason and plan reasonably," Giang added.
Student Trang Si Trong (majoring in computer science, University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that he and Giang were both in the same high school majoring in math, so they both decided to participate in the Math Olympiad.
"Quynh Giang is very determined when studying math for the exam. My major includes advanced math, so when she doesn't remember or needs to know new knowledge, I support her wholeheartedly. Students taking math exams helps us remember the time we spent studying and sharpening our thinking so it doesn't fade away" - Trong added.
Tran Ngoc Quynh Giang shared: "It's been a long time since I studied math, so my knowledge has decreased a bit. I was a bit nervous when taking the exam, but as long as I focused on solving the problems, I was confident right away. My current goal is to try to complete 3 subjects and my thesis to graduate early."
MSc. Nguyen Hoang Huy Tu - lecturer of basic science, Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City campus II, said that to participate in the contest, Quynh Giang seemed to have to make an effort to review from the beginning.
"I noticed that Quynh Giang is very passionate about math. You study foreign economics, which is different from math, so you have to review from the beginning. Giang took the exam when she was a third-year student. Before that, she skipped math for 2 years, so she had to make a lot of effort to review algebra and analysis.
This year, the school has 7 students taking the exam. I am very honored and happy for them because they have demonstrated their ability, versatility and talent. Giang's academic performance is very good, with a cumulative score of 3.85/4.0 points and only a few more subjects will complete the program" - Master Nguyen Hoang Huy Tu added.
Quynh Giang is also quite active when participating in many school competitions such as: Scientific Research, Math Competition, Foreign Trade Charm...
Class of 2018 - 2021, Quynh Giang was the valedictorian of the math entrance exam at Ben Tre High School for the Gifted. Giang received a scholarship from VIASM - Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics for the 2018 - 2019 school year. In 2019, Giang also won a bronze medal at the April 30 Olympics.
In 2021, Quynh Giang won first prize in the provincial math competition. In the same year, she also received the Odon Vallet scholarship.
Giang won the school's scholarship to encourage learning for students with good academic performance in all 4/4 semesters, was a 5-good student at the school level for 2 consecutive years, and won third prize in the 2024 Basic Science Research Student Competition.
