Treating black mold stains after a humid day

After humid days, many families have to deal with black mold stains on tiles, glass, and walls. However, these stains can be cleaned with simple ingredients.

1. Use borax

Borax is a white, odorless, tasteless, water-soluble chemical compound that has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It can be used on ceramic tiles, glass, wood, or other surfaces (as long as these materials are not too badly damaged by wet weather).

The first step is to use a vacuum cleaner equipped with a Hepa filter to clean up mold spores in the house. This filter can absorb a large number of very small particles, which can cause asthma and respiratory allergies in humans, that normal vacuum cleaners cannot do, such as filtering pollen, mold spores, pet dander and smoke.

Directions: Mix one cup (250ml) of borax with about four liters of water. Dip a toothbrush into the solution and scrub away the black mold. Allow the area to air dry, as the borax helps prevent mold from growing back.

2. Use detergent

This method is effective in cleaning mold on glass and tile surfaces.

Directions: Mix one cup of detergent (such as laundry detergent) with four liters of water. Scrub the moldy area with a brush dipped in the solution. When you're done scrubbing, rinse the area.

3. Use pure ammonia

Pure ammonia is an effective mold killer, but it is quite toxic and should only be used in small amounts. It can kill mold on glass and ceramic tiles, but is not effective on wood and some other porous surfaces.

Directions: Mix two small cups of pure ammonia with two cups of water in a spray bottle and spray onto the moldy area. Let it dry naturally for at least two hours, then wipe and rinse the area clean.

4. Use bleach

This method is very effective in removing mold from surfaces such as tiles and glass. However, because bleach has an unpleasant odor and can be toxic, it is important to find out if the area where you are removing mold is well ventilated. Before doing this, open all doors and windows and wear protective gloves.

Directions: Mix one cup of bleach with four liters of water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray the moldy area, or pour it into a bucket and wipe the area with a damp sponge. Let the bleach soak for an hour, scrub thoroughly, and rinse with water.

For wall surfaces, mix bleach with water in a 1:2 ratio. For example, for a 20 m2 wall area, use one liter of bleach and two liters of clean water. Dip the paint roller into the mixture and roll it on the moldy wall. Then use a brush to scrub clean.

5. Kill mold with Hydrogen peroxide

This is a clear, viscous liquid oxidizer and a strong bleaching agent.

How to: Buy a large bottle of 3% Hydrogen peroxide at the drugstore and follow these steps: Fill the bottle with 3% hydrogen peroxide and spray it on the moldy areas, let it sit for 20 minutes and then wipe the surface clean.

6. Use tea tree oil

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is a fresh, almost clear essential oil with a camphorous smell. It is effective in killing mold.

Directions: Mix two teaspoons of tea tree oil with two cups of water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray onto the moldy area. Allow to dry without rubbing, as the tea tree oil will continue to inhibit mold spores from growing.

7. Use white vinegar

Pure white vinegar can be used for severe mold stains, while white vinegar diluted 1:1 with water can be used for lighter moldy areas. White vinegar is a good solution for all surfaces, including carpet and wood.

How to do: Pour white vinegar or diluted white vinegar mixture into a bottle and spray on the moldy area, let dry naturally. For moldy walls, leave for 30 minutes then wipe clean with a soft cloth.

8. Use baking soda to kill mold

This is a natural, effective solution for all surfaces.

Directions: Mix a quarter teaspoon of baking soda with two cups of water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray the moldy areas, scrubbing with a brush. After rinsing, spray the baking soda solution again to prevent mold from growing back.
