A multi-vehicle collision on the outskirts of Guatemala's capital pushed a bus off a bridge and into a ravine, killing 55 people.
A serious traffic tragedy occurred in the suburbs of Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, early on February 10, when a bus plunged into a ravine after a series of collisions, killing 55 people.
The bus fell 35 meters into a stream contaminated with sewage, according to Hector Flores, the city government's response coordinator.
Fire department spokesman Edwin Villagran said the accident occurred after a multi-vehicle collision, causing the bus to be pushed off the bridge.
The bus, which had departed from Progreso, northeast of the capital Guatemala City, was found upside down and half submerged in a stream. Firefighters at the scene said children were among the victims.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo sent his condolences to the victims' families and declared three days of national mourning to honor those who died.
