On April 2, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement emphasizing the need for the international community to have a legal assessment of Israel's attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus, and strongly criticized the attack.
Russia's TASS news agency quoted the statement as saying that Moscow called on Israel to abandon such violence in Syria and neighboring countries. From Moscow's point of view, Israel's airstrike on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus was unacceptable.
Russia's statement said any violation of diplomatic and consular missions is completely unacceptable, as their immunity is enshrined in the Vienna Convention. The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the attack was carried out in a densely populated area of the capital, resulting in the deaths of many civilians.
On the same day, Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky said the UN Security Council will hold an open meeting at Russia's request at 3:00 p.m. on April 2 (US time) to discuss the Israeli attack.
Earlier, the Syrian Defense Ministry said the attack occurred at around 5 p.m. on April 1 (local time) when Israel launched a missile from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus. Iranian Ambassador to Syria Hossein Akbari said at least five diplomats were killed and two security personnel were injured in the attack. Meanwhile, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that seven of its members, including two generals, were killed and at least 12 others were injured. Senior commander of the IRGC's Quds Force Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi was among those killed.
On the same day, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that China opposes Israel's airstrike on Iran's consulate in Damascus. The official's statement stressed that the safety of diplomatic missions cannot be violated and that Syria's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity must be respected. Wang said that the current situation in the Middle East is chaotic, so Beijing opposes any actions that escalate tensions there.
Similarly, Pakistan also strongly condemned the Israeli attack. According to the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, the violence was an unacceptable violation of Syria's sovereignty and undermined the security and stability of the Middle Eastern country. The statement also expressed condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the government and people of Iran.
