According to Ms. Luong Thi Kiem, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hai Duong province, the province has now completed the 2024-2025 winter crop production and entered the main harvest time.

“As soon as storm No. 3 ended, farmers focused on planting onions, garlic, carrots, etc. and it can be said that the winter crop was a complete success,” said Ms. Kiem.

Accordingly, the winter crop area of Hai Duong this year increased by nearly 200 hectares compared to the same period last year. In addition to the increased area, the output of most winter crops increased, especially onions, garlic, and carrots, which increased by 30-40%, and some households even increased their production by 50% compared to the same period last year. In addition, the selling prices of winter crops are all good, and consumption is favorable.

According to the leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hai Duong province, farmers have identified winter crops as a source of wealth, so despite difficulties at the beginning of the season, they are still determined to go to the fields and expand the area as much as possible. In addition, Hai Duong province also has policies to support the expansion of winter crop areas. The quality of winter crops is well maintained, with few pests and diseases, so farmers almost do not have to use pesticides. The domestic market and export of Hai Duong's winter crop products also show positive signs.

Hai Duong's winter vegetable products consumed within the province only account for about 20 - 30%, the rest are mainly for export and consumption in the provinces.

According to Ms. Luong Thi Kiem, although this year's favorable weather has helped limit the use of pesticides, specialized agencies have still increased inspection and supervision of facilities purchasing and packaging winter crop products. In addition, the province has also continuously instructed farmers to use pesticides properly, ensuring quarantine periods to maintain product quality.

Mr. Luong Van Hung, head of Xa Lo village, Thang Long commune, Kinh Mon town (Hai Duong), said that the total area of onion and garlic in the commune is about 235 hectares, the selling price is about 14,500 - 15,500 VND/kg. Mr. Hung said that because this year's winter crop is favorable, there is still a large area of onion and garlic that has not been harvested, so farmers want to keep it to sell when the price is better.

The 2024-2025 winter crop in Hai Duong province is expected to have a good harvest and good prices thanks to favorable weather conditions. After the storm, the dry weather facilitates land preparation and planting. The Northeast monsoon arrives early, creating a large difference in day-night temperatures, helping to increase productivity, output and crop quality compared to the previous year.

The output of onions and garlic is expected to reach 135,000 tons, up 20-25%, and the selling price will increase by 10-15%. The average income will reach 12-16 million VND/sao (equivalent to 333.6-444.8 million VND/ha), with a profit of 9-12 million VND/sao. Cabbage, kohlrabi and cauliflower will have an output of 191,200 tons, up 12-15%, with an average income of 7-12 million VND/sao (194.6-333.5 million VND/ha), with a profit of 5-8.5 million VND/sao (360m2). Carrots alone are expected to have an output of 68,500 tons, up 10-15%, mainly for export (more than 80% of output). Carrot harvesting will last until April 2025.

About 75% of winter vegetable output is supplied to major cities and exported outside the province, the remaining 25% is consumed within the province. The average winter crop production value for the whole crop is about 250 million VND/ha, an increase of 23.4 million VND/ha compared to the previous year. This winter crop not only has high output but also sells well, bringing significant income to the people.
