ForwardKeys data shows that this summer, Vietnam ranked 19th in the list of destinations welcoming the largest number of visitors by air.

Travel data analytics firm ForwardKeys has released global air travel trends for this summer, based on flight bookings from July 1 to August 31. During this period, global airfares were 31% higher than the same period in 2022 and 23% lower than 2019 levels.

In terms of regular flight tickets, the US is the most popular destination, accounting for 11% of the total number of global air travelers during the summer. Following the US are Spain, the UK, Italy, Japan, France, Mexico, Germany, Canada and Türkiye. In this list, Vietnam ranks 19th, after South Korea and above Switzerland.

According to ForwardKeys statistics, the number of visitors to Vietnam by air this summer is only 28% lower than before the Covid-19 pandemic and 112% lower than the same period in 2022.

Statistics from Vietnam show that in July and August, Vietnam's tourism industry recovered significantly in terms of international visitors, with about 2.25 million arrivals (equal to 80% compared to the same period in 2019), of which about 1.97 million arrived by air (equal to 88% compared to the same period in 2019).

ForwardKeys says coastal destinations are likely to recover faster, especially warm tropical beaches. Costa Rica, Colombia, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Greece, Tanzania, the Bahamas, and Mexico dominate the rankings of summer destinations with the highest recovery rates compared to 2019. Destinations in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico benefit from U.S. travelers, who are the largest source of international air travel this summer.

ForwardKeys expert Olivier Ponti is optimistic about the recovery of the air travel industry in the coming time: “Global flight bookings in the last 3 months of the year are only 4% behind 2019, while in the first 3 months of 2024 they have exceeded 3% compared to the same period in 2019. The biggest promise in the fourth quarter of this year is the Middle East region, where flight bookings increased by 37% compared to 2019, followed by Central America with an increase of 33% and the Caribbean with an increase of 24%”.
