Le Quang Liem and Pham Le Thao Nguyen both failed, causing both the Vietnamese men's and women's teams to lose in round 10 of the Chess Olympiad.
The men's team suffered their second defeat at the 2024 Olympiad, losing 1.5-2.5 to 13th seed Spain. Quang Liem (2,741) held the white pieces but lost to David Anton (2,665) on board one.
In the remaining three games, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (2,633) and Tran Tuan Minh (2,434) drew with Francisco Vallejo Pons (2,657) and Jaime Santos Latasa (2,624) respectively. In the final game, Le Tuan Minh (2,564) had the advantage of winning against Alan Pichot (2,628) in the endgame, but did not handle it well and was held to a draw.
Table one is the only place where the men's team has a higher Elo than Spain, when Quang Liem has a 76 coefficient higher than Anton. The number one Vietnamese player also has a big advantage in the middle game, when he has a higher suit. However, with just one sacrifice, the Spanish representative turned the situation around and achieved the advantage of winning.
Quang Liem still tried to hold on, until Anton won the queen in move 39. Vietnam's number one player accepted defeat from a winning position. Meanwhile, Le Tuan Minh turned a winning position into a draw, causing the men's team to lose their second match of the tournament.
After the first six rounds, the men's team was second in the table with five wins and one draw. But in the last four rounds, the team lost two, drew two, and dropped to 25th place with 13 points. The possibility of Quang Liem and his teammates entering the top 10 is almost gone.
In the penultimate round of the Women's Group, Vietnam lost to host Hungary 1.5-2.5. Thao Nguyen (2.380) also held the white pieces and lost to Zsoka Gaal (2.385) in the first table. In the last two tables, Luong Phuong Hanh (2.225) and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong (2.214) did not have the advantage at any point against Petra Papp (2.259) and Szidonia Lazarne Vajda (2.283), accepting a share of the points.
In the final game, Vo Thi Kim Phung (2,320) had a moment of winning advantage over the Vietnamese-Hungarian player, Hoang Thanh Trang (2,351), but she was unable to take advantage and only tied. Despite the loss, the women's team still remained in 11th place, with 14 points, due to the high additional index.
The final round will take place at 4pm today, September 22, Hanoi time, four hours earlier than usual. The men's team will face 50th seed Canada, while the women's team will face 4th seed China.
