On the afternoon of September 20, the VNVC Vaccination System announced that it has officially started vaccinating children from 4 years old and adults against dengue fever at nearly 200 VNVC centers.
Doctor Bach Thi Chinh, Medical Director of VNVC Vaccination System, said that Takeda's dengue fever vaccine (Japan) was approved by the Ministry of Health in May 2024. VNVC Vaccination System, together with the manufacturer, has made efforts to bring it to Vietnam soon, because this is one of the most anticipated vaccines when every year in Vietnam there are large and small outbreaks, causing hundreds of thousands of cases and dozens of deaths in many localities.
According to Associate Professor Tran Dac Phu, former Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine, Vietnam is currently circulating all four types of Dengue virus that cause dengue fever, of which the main circulating virus types are Den-1 and Den-2. Type Den-2 is often associated with severe cases of dengue fever and epidemics, as well as being the major cause of deaths related to dengue fever.
Japan's Takeda dengue vaccine was first introduced in the world in 2018 and is now widely used in more than 40 countries, especially in countries with frequent complicated epidemics. With modern technology, the vaccine is effective in preventing all 4 types of dengue virus that cause the disease (Den-1, Den-2, Den-3, Den-4), with an effectiveness of up to 80% and preventing the risk of hospitalization by up to 90%.
Mr. Tran Dac Phu said that, in particular, the vaccine is effective in preventing reinfection for people who have had dengue fever, which is very meaningful for Vietnam because the number of people who have had dengue fever at least once is quite high, with the subsequent illness often being more severe than the previous one. Therefore, timely vaccination helps patients protect their health and lives.
Dengue vaccine is given in 2 doses, 3 months apart, and can be given at the same time as other vaccines depending on the type. Women should complete the vaccination schedule at least 3 months before pregnancy and at least 1 month before pregnancy.
Ms. Le Hong Nga, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control, said that experience over many years has shown that when vaccines are put into use, they help reduce the number of cases significantly. According to epidemiological surveillance results, Vietnam is circulating all 4 types of dengue virus, so a vaccine that can prevent all 4 types of virus is necessary.
“The implementation of dengue fever vaccination in Vietnam helps the preventive health sector and people have more weapons to prevent and effectively deal with dengue fever, in addition to measures to control mosquitoes, larvae and prevent mosquito bites, which still face many difficulties,” Ms. Nga assessed.
On the treatment side, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Head of the Dengue Fever Department, Children's Hospital 1, hopes that the dengue fever vaccine put into use in Vietnam will help reduce the burden of disease for people, reduce the number of hospitalizations and complications, avoid overload, and help hospitals focus resources on treating non-communicable diseases.
