On the morning of May 30, the People's Court of Hai Duong province held a first-instance trial and sentenced Tran Van Duc (born in 1998, in Thanh Mien town) to death for murder and robbery.
Get paid to play games
According to the indictment, Duc was a delivery employee of Thuan Phong Express Company Limited, Bac Ninh Province Branch, working at the post office in Quang Minh Commune (Gia Loc). Duc was responsible for receiving goods at the post office, then delivering the goods to the assigned area, collecting money from customers to pay to Ms. BTTH (born in 1994, in Nghia An Commune, Ninh Giang).
On July 22, 2023, the total number of orders that Duc delivered and collected from customers was more than 21.4 million VND. Duc received the above amount of money and loaded it into his account to play online dice games and lost it all. At around 10 p.m. the same day, Duc texted Ms. H. to promise to deliver the money the next morning.
On the morning of July 23, 2023, because Duc had made an appointment with Ms. H. but did not have the money to pay, Duc came up with the idea of asking for a debt extension when he met Ms. H. If Ms. H. did not agree, Duc would kill Ms. H. to avoid paying the money.
Murder of a colleague
At 10:00 a.m. on July 23, 2023, Duc carried a crossbody bag with a pocket knife inside and rode his motorbike to a field about 500 meters from his house. He hid the motorbike there and walked to the field to the meeting place with Ms. H. When Ms. H. arrived, Duc told Ms. H. to take him home via the shortcut in the field to get the money to pay. When he got home, Duc lied again that he did not leave the money at home but left it in the trunk of his motorbike. He told Ms. H. to turn the motorbike back the way he came to get the money to pay.
Listening to Duc, Ms. H. drove him to the fields in Phuong Hoang Ha area, Thanh Mien town. On the way, Duc told Ms. H. to let him owe more than 21.4 million VND, but Ms. H. did not agree. Ms. H. threatened to tell everyone at the post office that Duc did not pay the money to the company.
At this time, Ms. H. was still riding the motorbike, Duc sat behind and took a knife from his pocket and stabbed Ms. H. in the back of the neck, causing both of them to fall into the edge of the ditch. Ms. H. got up and ran to the shore and ran about 15 meters before falling into the concrete ditch. Seeing that, Duc ran after her to the place where Ms. H. fell and stabbed Ms. H. repeatedly. When Duc saw someone coming towards him, he stopped stabbing Ms. H. but put away the knife and covered Ms. H. with 2 sacks.
After that, Duc returned to Ms. H's motorbike and saw that the motorbike trunk was open, with some objects and documents falling onto the road. Duc picked up the objects that had fallen out and left them in Ms. H's motorbike trunk, then closed the trunk and put the motorbike up. When people approached, Duc lied that his sister had an accident and was taken to the hospital. Duc asked this person to take him to the place to get his motorbike and then returned to the scene of the crime.
Discovering a handbag next to Ms. H's motorbike, Duc immediately took the handbag and glasses and rode his motorbike home. Duc took more than 31.7 million VND, a mobile phone and some other assets worth more than 5.8 million VND from Ms. H's handbag and threw the bag into the river. Discovering that the sandals he was wearing were stained with blood, he threw them into the river and went home. On the way, Duc threw the murder knife into the Cuu An River. He hid Ms. H's money in an abandoned house behind the Phu Noi cultural house in Thanh Mien town.
At noon on July 23, 2023, people discovered Ms. H's body and reported it to the police. Using professional measures, the Criminal Police Department (Hai Duong Provincial Police) coordinated with Thanh Mien District Police to investigate and arrest Duc just over an hour after receiving the report.
At court, based on the nature, level, and behavior, the Trial Panel sentenced Tran Van Duc to death for murder and 8 years in prison for robbery. The total sentence forced the defendant Duc to serve a combined sentence of death.
