National Economics University upgraded to National Economics University

The Government requires the National Economics University to reorganize its structure and operations in accordance with the Law on Higher Education and related regulations. During that process, the school must ensure the rights and interests of all parties, operate normally, and avoid negativity, loss, and waste of finance and assets.

The University Council and the Principal continue to perform their duties until the Ministry of Education and Training recognizes the University Council and the Director of the National Economics University.

There are currently 9 universities nationwide, including: Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Duy Tan University, and National University of Economics. Except for Duy Tan University, which is a private university, the rest are public institutions, receiving investment from the budget and owned by the state.

According to the 2018 Law on Higher Education, universities and colleges are two different concepts. Universities and colleges are training and research institutions in many fields. Universities train and research in many fields, including member universities and faculties.

To convert from a university to a college, Decree 99/2019 of the Government stipulates that schools must ensure three conditions: be assessed by a legal accreditation organization as meeting quality standards; have at least three schools and 10 doctoral training majors, with a full-time student population of over 15,000; and be approved by the direct management agency and investors.

Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son has repeatedly said that the change from university to college is not just about the name, but also about the development orientation.

The university model is suitable for a large system with a large and diverse number of staff, lecturers and students. This model ensures autonomy and unified management, while creating conditions for each affiliated unit to have autonomy, helping the whole system increase dynamism and creativity.

Previously, in early 2024, the National Economics University established three affiliated schools: Economics and Public Management, Business and Technology.

The National Economics University currently has about 25,000 full-time students and more than 1,200 staff and lecturers. The number of undergraduate training majors is 66 and the number of doctoral programs is 28. In the development strategy for the period 2021-2030, the school aims to be among the top 5 universities in Vietnam.
