On December 17, the South Korean military announced that North Korea launched an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea of the country.
Yonhap news agency quoted a statement from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) saying that the agency confirmed the launch had taken place but did not provide details.
Two days earlier, South Korea's Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo said North Korea could launch a ballistic missile this month. Pyongyang last test-fired a ballistic missile on November 22, but the JCS said the launch failed.
