North Korea successfully launched a new carrier rocket Chollima-1, putting the Malligyong-1 reconnaissance satellite into orbit from the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground in Cholsan County, North Phyongan Province.

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, the above information was announced by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Accordingly, North Korean President Kim Jong-un viewed satellite photos taken on November 29 when he received an activity report from the Pyongyang General Control Center of the National Aerospace Technology Administration.

North Korean satellites took photos of the San Diego Naval Base in California at 2:24 a.m. on November 29, Kadena Air Base in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture at 10:16 a.m., and Egypt's Suez Canal at 4:36 p.m.

North Korea said the reconnaissance satellite also took pictures of the White House, the Pentagon and major military facilities in South Korea as well as the US territories of Guam and Hawaii.

Chairman Kim Jong-un also received images of the Italian capital Rome, Anderson Air Force Base, Newport Shipyard and an airport in the US state of Virginia. However, North Korea has not released related satellite images.

North Korea launched the Malligyong-1 reconnaissance satellite with a new Chollima-1 rocket last week after two failed tests in May and August. The country has said it will launch more satellites soon.

The satellite adjustment process is being accelerated to finish one or two days earlier than expected thanks to the facilities and control systems of the National Aerospace Technology Agency.

Earlier, on November 27, North Korean Ambassador to the United Nations Kim Song told the Security Council that the recent launch of a reconnaissance satellite was a legitimate act of self-defense and rejected the US accusations. Mr. Kim Song said that North Korea has the legal right to develop, test, manufacture and possess weapons systems similar to those the US possesses or is developing.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield rejected North Korea's assertion that the satellite launch was for self-defense purposes, and declared that the joint US-South Korea exercises were routine and defensive in nature.

Immediately after North Korea launched its reconnaissance satellite, Western countries, Japan and South Korea issued statements saying that North Korea had violated United Nations Security Council resolutions.

South Korea and the European Union (EU) have condemned North Korea's recent launch of a military reconnaissance satellite, calling it a serious threat to peace, and agreed to work for a unified international response to the provocation, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said on November 29.

The US Treasury Department on November 29 announced additional sanctions related to North Korea following Pyongyang's military reconnaissance satellite launch last week.

In a related development, on November 30, President Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo-jong, rejected the possibility of resuming dialogue with the US, affirming that Pyongyang will never sit face to face with Washington.

For her part, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Washington continues to call for dialogue with Pyongyang without preconditions, regardless of whether North Korea chooses to dialogue or not, nor does it consider the timing and topic of the dialogue.
