Toyota adds a new product to its electric vehicle portfolio with the bZ7 model in the C-segment sedan segment, but it is still only in concept form.
The all-electric C-segment sedan is expected to launch as a commercial product in 2025. The bZ7 will compete with rivals such as the Xiaomi SU7, BYD Han, and Luxeed S7.
It’s unclear whether the bZ7 will be exclusive to the Chinese market or if it will be sold in other markets around the world. Currently, Toyota has only one all-electric model outside of China, the bZ4X, but in China, the bZ line is growing rapidly, starting with the bZ3 sedan.
The exterior design of the bZ7 looks similar to the Comfortable Space Concept model that debuted at the 2024 Guangzhou Auto Show. The car will be manufactured by the GAC Toyota joint venture.
The bZ7 has a sleek coupe shape. The front grille is sealed with a continuous light strip. This style is repeated at the rear of the car with a continuous taillight system.
At Toyota, this model is known as the 630D project. In May, GAC Group approved GAC Toyota's 630D project proposal with a total investment of 1.588 billion yuan ($218 million). According to the previous plan, GAC Toyota planned to launch a mid-size/large-size pure electric sedan this year called the Comfortable Space. Many people believe that the bZ7, Comfortable Space, and the 630D project are one car.
Currently, the GAC Toyota joint venture sells the bZ3X and bZ4X models (sold as the Bozhi 4X). Meanwhile, the FAW Toyota joint venture has the bZ3 and bZ4X models. The bZ3C will join the FAW lineup in the coming months after appearing on the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) list in September. Although the bZ3X model has appeared on the GAC Toyota website, deliveries are only scheduled to begin in March 2025.
The bZ3X and bZ3C models were both unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year and follow on from concepts shown at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. In that timeframe, the bZ7 is expected to go on sale in the summer of 2025.
Starting with the bZ3 sedan, Toyota's pure electric products in China have relied heavily on BYD technology for their powertrains, including BYD's blade batteries and electric motors. This also applies to the bZ3C and is likely to be the case for the bZ7 as well.
