Top 10 best-selling cars in May: Corolla Cross returns, Xpander maintains top position

Data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) report shows that the Vietnamese automobile market in May improved slightly, increasing by 6% compared to the previous month. In particular, most of the best-selling car models had positive sales growth.

In the list of 10 best-sellers last May, Mitsubishi Xpander was the most prominent name with sales of 1,766 units and continued to lead the market. Ford Ranger still held the number 2 position, but the gap with Xpander was quite far, up to nearly 300 units.

Most notable in the top 10 best-selling cars is the return of the Toyota Corolla Cross right after being refreshed in early May. This crossover model even made it into the top 3 and became Toyota's best-selling car. In addition to the Corolla Cross, the Japanese automaker also has 3 more names in the top 10: Yaris Cross (5th), Vios (9th) and Veloz Cross (10th).

On the other hand, Toyota Innova Cross and Honda CR-V could no longer maintain good enough sales and accepted to "pop" out of the top 10. Thus, Honda and KIA are the car manufacturers that do not have any representatives in the top 10 of May.

Below are details of the 10 car models with the highest sales in May 2024:

1. Mitsubishi Xpander: 1,766 units

Last May, Mitsubishi Xpander sold 1,766 units, up 40% compared to the previous month (1,263 units), still maintaining the No. 1 position in the entire market. Compared to May 2023, Xpander sales increased by 51%. Xpander's cumulative sales in the first 5 months of 2024 reached 6,537 units, down slightly by 2.5% compared to the same period in 2023.

The new upgraded Mitsubishi Xpander appeared from June 2022, distributed in 3 versions: MT, AT, AT Premium, in addition to the new model Xpander Cross. The car uses a 1.5L engine. The selling price of Xpander is from 560-658 million VND, the Xpander Cross model launched in early 2023 is priced at 698 million VND.

2. Ford Ranger: 1,477 units

Ford Ranger achieved sales of 1,477 units in May, up 17% compared to the previous month (1,262 units) and up 45% compared to May 2023. In the first 5 months of the year, Ford Vietnam sold 6,301 Ranger units and ranked 2nd after Mitsubishi Xpander. This figure increased slightly by 5% compared to the same period in 2023.

Ford Ranger currently has versions XL, XLS, XLT, Wildtrak, Stormtrak and the special model imported from Thailand, Raptor. The selling price of the car ranges from 659 million to 1.299 billion VND. The Ranger versions have 2 engine options: 2.2L Turbo diesel for the lower versions and 2.0L Bi-Turbo diesel engine for the Wildtrak, Stormtrak and Raptor versions.

3. Toyota Corolla Cross: 996 units

The Corolla Cross model had a sharp increase in sales in May with 996 units sold. Previously, in April, Toyota's car model was in the top 10 slowest-selling cars in the market with only 14 units. Compared to the same period in May 2023, Corolla Cross's sales last month decreased slightly by 2%. In the first 5 months of the year, 1,367 Corolla Cross units were sold on the market, only about 1/4 compared to the same period in 2023.

In early May 2024, Toyota's B+ crossover model was renewed with some changes in appearance, equipment and price. Accordingly, Corolla Cross has cut the low version, the G version, and only keeps 2 versions: the V version with a 1.8L engine (pure gasoline) and HEV (hybrid). The prices of these 2 versions are 820 and 905 million VND, respectively.

4. Hyundai Accent: 924 units

Hyundai's sedan model achieved sales in May 0 of 924 units, an increase of 9% compared to the previous month (848 units) and an increase of exactly 4 units compared to May 2023. In the first 5 months of 2024, a total of 4,020 Hyundai Accent units were sold on the market, down 32% compared to the same period in 2023 but still leading the B-class sedan segment.

The new generation Hyundai Accent 2024 model was just launched by Hyundai Thanh Cong Automobile Joint Venture at the end of May with 4 versions, equipped with Smartstream 1.5L engine. Of which, the manual version costs 439 million VND. The three automatic versions cost from 489-569 million VND.

5. Toyota Yaris Cross: 902 units

With 902 units sold in May, Toyota's model increased slightly by 2% compared to the previous month (882 units) and still ranked 5th in the top 10 best-selling cars in the market. In the first 5 months of the year, Toyota Vietnam sold a total of 2,939 Yaris Cross units.

Toyota Yaris Cross is a completely new model that was just launched in the Vietnamese market at the end of September 2023. The car belongs to the B-SUV segment, imported completely from Indonesia with 2 versions, including 1 version using a 1.5L gasoline engine and 1 hybrid version, the only one in the segment. The selling prices of the 2 versions are 730 and 838 million VND, respectively.

6. Mazda CX-5: 892 units

The Mazda crossover model in Vietnam sold 892 units in May, up 11.5% compared to April and down slightly by 2% compared to May 2023. This sales helped the CX-5 increase by 1 rank compared to the previous month, to number 6. Accumulated in the first 5 months of 2024, Mazda CX-5 sales reached 4,011 units, down 4% compared to the same period last year.

In early July 2023, Mazda CX-5 was renewed with 3 versions, equipped with Skyactiv-G engine with capacity of 2.0L, priced from 749-829 million VND. Of which, the Premium version has two optional packages: Sport (additional 20 million VND) or Exclusive (additional 40 million VND).

7. Ford Everest: 811 units

Ford Everest continues to be in the top 10 at number 7, up 2 places from the previous month. Last month's sales of Everest reached 811 units, up 6% compared to April (766 units) and up 28% compared to May 2023. In the first 5 months of 2024, Ford Vietnam sold a total of 3,612 Everest units, down 7% compared to the same period last year.

The Ford Everest D-SUV model was refreshed in July 2022 and added the latest Platinum upgrade in March this year. In total, the model has 6 versions, with prices ranging from 1.099-1.545 billion VND. The engine of the 3 versions Ambiente, Sport and Titanium is a 2.0-liter single-turbocharged I4 diesel; while the 2 highest versions Everest Titanium+, Wildtrack and the new Platinum version use a 2.0L Bi-Turbo diesel engine.

8. Mitsubishi Xforce: 802 units

In May, Mitsubishi's B-SUV model sold 802 units, a slight decrease of 4 units compared to April. This decrease also caused the Xforce to fall from 6th to 8th place on the list of best-selling vehicles. Cumulatively, the Xforce's sales since the beginning of the year are 2,942 units.

The B-SUV Mitsubishi Xforce is imported from Indonesia with 4 versions: GLX, Exceed, Premium and Ultimate. Of which, the first 3 versions are priced from 559-680 million VND. The price of the highest version, Ultimate, has not been announced yet and is expected to arrive in Vietnam in June. All versions use a 1.5L engine combined with a CVT and front-wheel drive.

9. Toyota Vios: 766 units

If in April, Toyota Vios ranked 3rd in the top 10 best-selling cars, then in May, Vios sales decreased by 17%, to only 766 units and dropped to 9th place. However, this number still increased by 31% compared to the same period in 2023. Cumulative sales of Vios in the first 5 months of the year reached 3,446 units, down exactly 1% compared to the same period last year.

Toyota Vios currently sold in Vietnam has been slightly upgraded since May 2023 with 3 optional versions including 1 manual transmission and 2 automatic transmission versions, using a 1.5L gasoline engine, current prices range from 458-545 million VND.

10. Toyota Veloz Cross: 604 units

The fourth Toyota model to make it into the top 10 best-selling cars is the Veloz Cross. This is also the first time in 2024 that Veloz has made it into this list. In May, 604 Velozs were sold, up 15% compared to April (525 units). This sales figure increased slightly by 2.5% compared to the same period in 2023. In the first 5 months of the year, Toyota Vietnam delivered 2,097 Velozs to customers, down 42% compared to the same period in 2023.

Veloz Cross in Vietnam has 2 versions, both using a 1.5L engine combined with a CVT automatic transmission. The selling price of Veloz Cross for these 2 versions is 638 and 660 million VND respectively. From the beginning of 2023, Veloz Cross will be assembled domestically by Toyota Vietnam instead of imported from Indonesia.
