New parliamentary elections will be held on December 17.
On November 1, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic signed a decree dissolving the National Assembly and scheduled early parliamentary elections for December 17.
In addition, Serbia will also hold local elections in 65 cities, including the capital Belgrade.
Previously, on October 30, the Serbian Government officially proposed to President Vucic to set a date for the National Assembly (unicameral) elections. This request was made by the opposition on September 11.
The election is expected to ease political tensions that led to protests following shootings at a school and on the outskirts of the capital Belgrade in May.
Serbian Defense Minister Milos Vucevic was elected chairman of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in late May, after President Vucic resigned as party leader but remained a member of the party.
Since the SNS came to power in 2012, parliamentary elections have been held in Serbia on average every two years.
In April 2022, Serbia held presidential and parliamentary elections. By the end of October 2022, the Serbian Parliament approved a new cabinet list headed by Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.
Currently, SNS and its allies hold 151 seats in the 250-seat Serbian Parliament.
