He expressed hope that the process would pave the way for cooperation in many areas, including arms control, space exploration and energy.
He stressed that rebuilding trust between Russia and the United States is essential to solving a number of pressing issues, including resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
President Putin also criticized the reaction from the EU and Kiev, calling it inappropriate and completely groundless. He stressed that the main goal now is to restore US-Russia relations, adding that the two countries do not need any intermediaries to resolve their differences.
"Russia has never refused to contact EU countries or pulled out of negotiations with Ukraine," the Russian leader added, saying that Moscow is ready to return to the peace process at any time, but the final decision lies with Kiev and Brussels.
