The mayor of the French capital Paris, Anne Hidalgo, recently announced her intention to push ahead with a car-free project to create an area with parks connecting the Eiffel Tower and the Trocadero walkway.

Ms. Hidalgo wants to use the occasion of the 2024 Summer Olympics to start the project as soon as the sporting event ends.

The project fits into Mayor Hidalgo's other efforts to curb car traffic in the capital and create a greener Paris.

Ms. Hidalgo launched the project in 2019, but faced opposition from the city's then police chief, Didier Lallement, and the authorities of three districts over concerns about traffic disruption.

In January, Ms Hidalgo announced a similar plan to ban cars from half of the central Place de la Concorde, home to the iconic Luxor Obelisk, in hopes of using the Olympics to drum up support for the ambitious project.

Ouest-France newspaper on February 6 quoted Ms. Hidalgo's statement in an interview with the newspaper saying: "After the Olympics, there will be no more cars passing in front of the Eiffel Tower."

"A green Trocadero, the pedestrian bridge of Iena and the Champ-de-Mars lawn at the foot of the Eiffel Tower will be replanted, all together forming a vast park in the heart of Paris," Mayor Hidalgo stressed.

Supporters of the project praised Ms Hidalgo's efforts to reduce pollution and increase green space in the densely populated city, which has seen increasingly frequent summer heatwaves.

During her first term, Ms. Hidalgo achieved her biggest urban victory, a pedestrian walkway on the embankment on the right bank of the Seine. However, the Trocadero project was rejected by the administrative court in 2022 and 2023. Ms. Hidalgo has come up with a revised plan, hoping that the Olympics will bring new opportunities.

The Eiffel Tower is one of the world's most famous monuments, with 6.3 million tourists visiting in 2023. Around 15 million visitors are expected to attend the Olympic and Paralympic Games in July, August and September.
